Evidence of Green Oaks' community spirit begins with its origination. The entire community of 150 residents celebrated at a dinner in 1960 when the original name of the village was changed from the Village of Oak Grove and then renamed Green Oaks in 1960. The celebration of life in Green Oaks today owes heavily to the words of the first president of the Village Board of Trustees in 1960 who said that the village "strives…to be a community of high merit" and to be a rural oasis from the advancement of industrial expansion of the time.
Green Oak's creed to preserve its open and rural landscape for its residents has meant carefully controlling growth in order to maintain its renowned quality of countryside life. Today, Green Oaks' ordinances sustain this objective through firm standards of the land and zoning that has patterns for one, two and five acre residential lot zoning. While residential land has is primarily on the west side of the toll road, the east side has land annexed by the village for industry. Growth is expected to continue for the next two decades, but the community is prepared to guard its rural lifestyle with the foresight upon which it was founded.
The natural beauty of the area can be enjoyed in other ways besides your back yard if you chose to buy a home in Green Oaks. The village's location in Lake County and the Township of Libertyville places it within short distances of the Saddle Hill/Forest Glen Nature Trail, open space district properties and numerous golf courses. With Lake Michigan only five miles to the east and several local golf courses to choose from, outdoor adventure opportunities seem nearly endless.
When the city life and its attractions call, residents can easily get to adjacent larger Village of Libertyville or be in downtown Chicago in less than an hour to enjoy major metropolitan museums, performances and much more. Green Oaks is easily accessed by visitors through major highways such as Interstate 94 and IL Routes 176 and 137 among others. The world is available to Green Oaks residents with O'Hare International Airport only 30 miles south.
